Self Love – keeping the channel clear

Recently I found the need to ponder what do I do for self-care. Those basic things I do every day so I can show up in the world and contribute in a positive way. Below are a few of the things I do to take care of myself and keep my channels clear of gunk that prevents me from being what I truly aspire to be, a channel for peace and love:

Pray daily – Praying grounds me, humbles me and sets me on the path to continue to receive support and guidance from my Higher Power and others. It starts my day in a place of gratitude for all that I have and all the opportunities in front of me. It reminds me I’m never alone unless I choose to be.

Meditate every morning – Meditation also grounds me in another way. I approach my meditation from a place of humility and then use the time to silence my thoughts (there is a loud and crazy committee up there) to become grounded in the moment. I then use this calm mind to focus on one intention for the day and visualize it in vivid detail. I find visualization to be a very, very powerful tool and quite fun! It’s really nothing more than returning to our childhood ways of make-believe. We just create in our mind what we want to happen and it does! (There will be a whole separate blog on this topic as it’s one of my favorites!!!)

Connect with others – Connecting with others may sound like a weird way to take care of myself but I tend to isolate. I know, I know, people who know me are thinking – WHAT!!! You isolate? You are such a big personality and so friendly and happy! Well, remember everyone shows you what they want you to see. In my case, I am acting that way in public not only because that is what I want you to see, but also, that is really how I want to be. Unfortunately, I regularly fight fear which often I can allow make me isolate.

Feed my body – My life journey has taught me that food serves a purpose and is not to be abused. (See Junk in junk out). I’ll briefly elaborate here as a teaser 🙂 It is self-care for me to put the fuel in my body that it needs so it can perform the functions I expect from it. When I am putting junk in my body or not drinking enough water, 100 oz per day, my body responds in ways that are not comfortable or make me sad. If I’m eating too much junk my bodies plumbing does not work very well (ugh how uncomfortable to be bloated or constantly running to the bathroom). If I’m not drinking enough water, I also have plumbing problems but my legs look like reptile skin, my wrinkles show more, and I feel like I look like a dried up old weed.

Go to Sleep! - I get no less than seven hours of sleep per night and most nights get a minimum of eight. I have to thank my husband for teaching me how important sleep is. Before I met him 10 years ago, I often worked very late at night, while snacking in bed, and forced my body to function on an average of five hours of sleep per night during the week and six on the weekends. Now I don’t mess around. I listen to my body and go to sleep, even if my kids are having a wild and crazy birthday party for my son in the next room.

Cycling (or any physical activity) – Cycling has many benefits for me. First, it’s a luxury and I feel so good when I allow myself to go for a ride longer than just some errands. (By the way it really does not have to be a luxury but more on that in - Why Do I Stand in My Way). I also find that I can both empty my mind
